MSF East Africa Association – Publication

Publication Design

Project Scope

Médecins Sans Frontières East Africa is the regional arm of the world-renowned humanitarian medical organization. Their annual publications serve as critical communication tools, documenting field operations, impact stories, and organizational milestones across the region. Creativ Razor was commissioned to design their yearly publication with the gravitas and clarity it deserved.

The Brief

MSF needed a publication design that would honour the weight of their humanitarian work while remaining visually engaging for donors, stakeholders, and the general public. The layout had to accommodate dense informational content alongside powerful field photography from across East Africa.

Publication design at its best tells the story before a single word is read — through rhythm, space, and visual hierarchy.

We developed a flexible grid system capable of handling MSF’s diverse content needs, from statistical infographics to full-bleed photography to detailed mission reports. The typography paired a strong serif for headlines with a clean sans-serif body, creating authority tempered by warmth.

Key Deliverables

Our Approach

Each spread was designed to tell a complete micro-story, guiding the reader’s eye from powerful imagery to supporting data. We used a restrained colour palette drawn from MSF’s brand guidelines, introducing accent colours only to highlight key statistics and calls to action.

The Result

The final publication was praised by MSF leadership for its clarity and emotional impact. The design successfully transformed complex operational data into an accessible narrative that resonated with international donors and drove increased engagement with the organization’s East African programs.
